Player Unity?
Commentators...er.. former fringe NHL players on the TV Sports Nets seem to be in agreement that the players union is powerful and completely unified, I can't see how this is possible. With fully half of the union working as "Replacement Players" in Europe and still more considering it as an option, with 70% of the union making less than the league average and with many careers in jeopardy, from the veteran player hanging in for one more year to the journeyman who only has a two or three year window of opportunity to forge his career, I think it is painfully obvious that a secret ballot would find an overwhelming majority willing to play under any conditions. It's laughable when people call the players overpaid bums because the average salary is 1.8 million, if you remove the top 30 salaries from the equation that figure would plummet. While it's true they are signing lucrative contracts in comparison to the common man, it is also true that this strike comes down to protecting the bottom line of the top 30 wage earners, the right to make obscene money in comparison to the third and fourth liners in the same locker room. Given the chance, I'm sure the teammates of guys like Guerin, Chelios and Tkachuk would vote to slice their "brother's" salaries.
